Code+Art 2016: Spiral's Edge
Spiral's Edge, created by Lucas Rumney, is the third prize winning entry for the 2016 Code+Art Student Visualization Contest. This work is composed of different three dimensional models and structures that are animated based on composite sine waves. A sinusoidal signal is a pure and simple pattern that appears in almost every discipline within mathematics or engineering. Spiral's Edge takes the simple sine wave function and demonstrates the complexity that can emerge from constructive and destructive interference. Over time, the central foreground figures and the background spiral display patterns that evoke both the fluid motion of natural processes and the jagged edges of the digital canvas that the piece exists within.
